On Friday 7 July Purnell’s celebrated an historic milestone - its first momentous decade. Over the last ten years the restaurant has led the way in shaping Birmingham’s ever-growing culinary profile.
Celebrated in true Purnell’s style, Glynn gave just fifteen lucky winners and their guests the evening of a lifetime as they came to the restaurant for an exclusive Krug champagne reception and a 10-course menu, 10 years to the day since Purnell’s first opened its doors to the public. The menu showcased some of Glynn’s best loved, signature dishes such as “Haddock and Eggs”, Monkfish Masala with Red Lentils, Picked Carrots and Coconut Garnish (a Great British Menu winning dish and one of the courses cooked at a banquet at the RAF's historic Halton House to honour men and women returning from active service in Afghanistan in 2009), and his famous Burnt English Custard Egg Surprise which won the dessert course of The Great British Menu with a perfect score in 2008.
Speaking about the 10th anniversary, Glynn said: “Ten years ago my dream came true when I opened the doors of Purnell's Restaurant. Ten years on and I'm still living the dream. When I first opened Purnell’s back in 2007, I had no idea where we would be today thanks to our customers and suppliers who are all a fantastic support to us. The team I have built is amazing and we worked hard to plan a commemorative anniversary night and create a 10-course menu that celebrated some Purnell’s favourites and reworked some original dishes for our 30 lucky guests.”
The fifteen successful golden ticket winners included Paul Colin from Tamworth. Paul said, “I was absolutely over the moon to find out that I had won one of Glynn’s golden tickets. My wife and I had always wanted to eat at Purnell’s and the evening was just superb. It exceeded all our expectations. I have followed Glynn’s career for years and it was a joy to meet him and celebrate Purnell’s 10th anniversary with him and his team.”
Alyson Jolly from Stockport brought her husband Tom as her chosen guest and said of the evening, “I was in disbelief when I came home and found the golden ticket on my doormat… I had goosebumps! I have been so excited for the last few weeks. My husband was on his best behaviour after I won the ticket, trying to win his place as my plus-one! It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening and we were spoilt rotten from start to finish. Getting to meet Glynn was the icing on the cake.”
Glynn concluded, “I am incredibly proud of the Restaurant’s 10th anniversary and the journey it has taken to get here. To be able to celebrate its first decade and mark this landmark is one of the greatest achievements of my career.”
